Malaysia shares four key focuses of the government to implement and drive the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) 2023, which is currently taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 5th to 9th June.

According to a statement released by the Local Government Development Ministry, the four focuses are policy alignment with strategic planning; governance structure; more accurate collection and sharing of data and information; and funds to achieve that goal.

Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming’s presentation of the key agendas at the High Level Interactive Strategic Dialogue on the Special Theme of the 2nd Session of the UN-Habitat Assembly draws the attention and interest of member countries, particularly in relation to policy implementation, development programmes, financing, and the provision of affordable housing.

“The Minister expressed Malaysia’s commitment to implement and drive the SDGS through these four key areas,” the statement said.

Nga’s participation in a series of forums and bilateral meetings with Kenyan President Dr William Samoei Ruto, his counterparts and leaders from UN-Habitat member states, as well as delivering the keynote address at a Chinese sideline programme, demonstrated Malaysia’s credibility on the international stage.

At the sideline programme hosted by China, Nga was invited to deliver a speech entitled Towards a Multilateral Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange System to Accelerate SDGS Implementation in Cities, which addressed Malaysia’s commitment to realising the sustainable urban development agenda.

Malaysia is always looking for new solutions to address the dynamic growth of urban development, and is ready to adopt best practices to mitigate its impacts on the environment, the statement said.

Nga also held a special meeting with the UN-Habitat Executive Director Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, to enhance cooperation on the sustainable development agenda.
