On 9th June, the government agreed that the provision of subsidies and price control over chicken and egg prices will continue from 1st July this year.

The matter was announced at a joint press release by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) on 9th June.

According to the statement, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim agreed with the proposal of KPKM and KPDN to continue with the provision of subsidies and price control of chicken and eggs.

“The decision was made after taking into account all aspects including ensuring that the chicken and egg industry remains sustainable and the welfare of the people continues to be protected. The provision of subsidies and price control is done to ensure that the welfare of the people is maintained in line with the Malaysian Government’s MADANI aspirations,” Anwar said.

KPKM Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu had earlier announced that there will be no more chicken and egg subsidies from the government starting 1st July. He is reported to have said that the termination allows KPDN to assess and control the price of goods whether they rise or fall (floated) compared to the current retail ceiling price.

The Council of Ministers meeting on 17th February decided to continue providing chicken and egg subsidies from 1st January to 30th June, 2023, earlier this year.
