KUCHING: The appointment of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the deputy prime minister is timely and will breathe new life into the administration of the country and the fight against Covid-19.

Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the appointment was timely due to the current political situation in the country.

"We hope the focus now will return to other important issues, namely the welfare, well-being and safety of the people as well as the country's economic recovery as we have been struggling due to the pandemic," he said in a statement.

"As a leader, we need to be aware that the people are watching everything that is happening and most importantly many will not agree with political games that can threaten the stability of the country at this time," he said.

Nanta said he used to work with Ismail Sabri when the latter was the Rural and Regional Development Minister.

"I was his deputy and I have always admired his leadership. Thus, I am confident he is capable of carrying out his duties and responsibilities as the deputy prime minister, especially at a time when the country is facing the Covid-19 pandemic."

GPS, he said, also welcomed the appointment of Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein as a senior minister and head the security cluster which was previously held by Ismail Sabri.

"He has proven his strong leadership and ability when dealing with the MH370 crisis and for that he has built a good reputation."

"Besides, he has addressed various issues in Sarawak, especially the aerial border encroachment by 16 Chinese aircrafts in May and Chinese coast guard vessel encroaching Beting Patinggi Ali last month," he said.
